Spanish IV
 

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish III or special permission of the instructor.

Spanish IV is a one-semester, full-block course which expands the foundation for acquiring a second language by using the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

 

World Languages and Cultures District Standards

Standard I: Students communicate in a foreign language while demonstrating literacy in all four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Standard II: Students acquire and use knowledge of other cultures while developing foreign language skills.

 

Level IV students will:

  • Identify the main idea from simple instructions or conversations, basic survival situations and familiar topics
  • Apply learned basic pronunciation and intonation patterns
  • Express and support personal opinions
  • Describe and narrate using learned vocabulary
  • Maintain brief conversations on familiar topics
  • Ask and answer questions
  • Read and derive meaning from a variety of target language sources
  • Write descriptions, narrations, and expressions/support of personal opinions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aspects of the Spanish culture such as daily life, education, history, government, economics, business and the arts
  • Distinguish similarities and differences among cultures
     

Functions: All functions learned in Intro, Spanish I, II, III, plus:

  • Talk about actions in the past, present and future
  • Make requests and suggestions
  • Give and respond to commands
  • Propose solutions
  • Hypothesize
  • Read and understand main ideas of simple, authentic texts

Content: Vocabulary learned in Intro, Spanish I, II, III, plus:

  • Expanded health/fitness vocabulary
  • Feelings/moods
  • Environment
  • Architectural and artistic terms
  • Historical terms
  • Basic geographical terms


Structure: All structures learned in Intro, Spanish I, II, III, plus:

  • Use all simple tenses
  • Use the following tenses: present perfect, past progressive, conditional, future
  • Use direct and indirect object pronouns and reflexive pronouns in a variety on contexts


Culture: All culture learned in Intro, Spanish I, II, III, plus:

  • Recognize the geography, architecture, historical figures, and history of Spain including aspects of art, 
    literature and music
  • Recognize aspects of nature, ecology, and the environment in equatorial regions
  • Recognize characteristics of the music of Spanish-speaking countries
  • Recognize types of accommodations in Spanish-speaking countries

100% - 90% = A
89% - 80% = B
79% - 70% = C
69% - 60% = D
59% - 0% = F
