French I is a two-semester course that expands the foundation for acquiring a second language by using the communication modes of interpersonal, interpretive and presentational while integrating the practices, products and perspectives of the Francophone cultures. Students will increase their communication skills and comprehension using a variety of materials and instructional strategies that reflect the needs of the novice proficiency level student.

Prerequisite: Introductory French is highly recommended.

 

World Languages and Cultures State and District Standards

Standard 1: Communication
Students communicate in a foreign language while developing literacy in all four essential foreign language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Standard 2: Culture
Students acquire and use knowledge of cultures while developing foreign language skills.

Level I students will:
* comprehend common learned words, expressions and simple instructions
* use basic pronunciation and intonation patterns
* express personal opinions, desires and needs
* describe everyday topics
* ask and answer simple questions
* read and derive meaning from a variety of target language sources 
* write about everyday topics
* demonstrate knowledge of aspects of Francophone cultures such as daily life, geography, business and the arts.
* distinguish similarities and differences among cultures

Functions: All functions learned in Intro plus:
Meet and greet, order and shop for food and beverages, use numbers, describe family, express likes and dislikes, give opinions, express need, describe weather, identify nationalities and professions, agree and disagree, request information, describe events in present, past and immediate future, write lists, notes and short letters, describe, make plans, compare and contrast school, identify places in a city, use directions to get around a city, read schedules, identify countries in the Francophone world, identify famous places in Paris, identify basic geography of France

Context: All vocabulary learned in Intro plus:
Food and beverages, food stores and markets, extended family, professions and nationalities, pastimes and sports, buildings in a city, directions, weather, question words, geography terms, housing and furniture, clothing, school items and classes, daily life, time, dates, numbers, parts of the body and personal information

Structure: All structure learned in Intro plus:
Use subject pronouns, use articles, use demonstrative and possessive adjectives, use present, immediate future and past tense verbs, know and use er, re, and ir and irregular verbs, use negatives, form information and yes/no questions, identify adverbs of quantity, quality and frequency, use adjectives, use prepositions, compare, use partitive, form plurals, use idioms 

Culture: All culture learned in Intro plus:

Distinguish between cultural similarities and differences and compare and contrast cultural similarities and differences among Francophone countries in all unit topics and information in Level I. 

Assessments and Grading Scale
100% - 90% = A
89% - 80% = B
79% - 70% = C
69% - 60% = D
59% - 0% = F

 
Grading will be based on:
Le Set and Set participation points-5% 
Quizzes-10%
Exams and projects-40%
Oral Proficiency assessments-10%
Writing Proficiency Assessments-10%
Assignments-25%
Grading will be based on Le Set speaking and participation points, quizzes, exams, speaking and writing situations, individual and group projects, assignments, worksheets and other activities. Students will be evaluated for the proficiency level expected in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. All assignments are due on time. It is the responsibility of each student to consult the teacher for make-up work. Make-up allowed according to school policy.

Attendance/Tardies
Many activities are done in class. Therefore, regular class attendance is necessary for success in a World Languages and Cultures class. Class begins on time. Le Set provides critical review and practice during the beginning of the period. Unexcused absences and tardies follow school policy. Check student handbook for details.

Everyday participation in class has the following benefits:
Maximum exposure to and participation in the language.
Personal growth, skill and confidence in a second language.
Developed communication and literacy skills
Diversity awareness and a multicultural perspective

More and more universities are requiring a minimum of three to four years of one language for admission or graduation.
More and more careers in this global society require the ability to be able to communicate in another language and to be culturally aware.

Guidelines for Success and Community Partnership:
1. Be on time. Follow attendance policy. Take personal responsibility for makeup work.
2. Bring text, materials and other supplies everyday. Books must be covered. 
3. Come to class everyday prepared to actively learn and participate.
4. Be an active listener. Follow classroom procedures.
5. Do Le Set everyday. It is a writing grade and a class participation grade.
6. Work and create with integrity and respect for yourself, the teacher and your peers.
7. Respect the property of others and the intellectual integrity including not copying from peers or the Internet. Do not use a computer translator. 
8. Demonstrate stewardship for our classroom environment and the school by keeping it clean.
9. Work cooperatively in groups.
10. Demonstrate intellectual curiosity, creativity and independence.
11. Demonstrate willingness to experience unfamiliar materials and situations with an open mind.
12. Harassment and other discipline issues will follow the LHS Discipline code.
