International Baccalaureate Organization Diploma Programme at Loveland High School
The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is an interdisciplinary,
intercultural approach to your high school education taken during your junior and
senior years. The program was founded in 1968 in Europe as a way of
standardizing a rigorous curriculum for the purpose of preparing students to enter
a college/university indifferent to where in the world they might be completing
their high school education.
You are encouraged to visit the IB website at www.ibo.org.
The Thompson School District IB program is housed at Loveland High School. IB preparation courses are
offered at grades 9 and 10 to assure that the student has adequate background and assessment
preparation for the Diploma Programme.
Students are members of Loveland High School if they choose the preparation courses in grades 9 and 10.
Students are members of Loveland High School as IB Diploma candidates in grades 11 and 12.
Students will receive a Loveland High School Diploma in May upon completion of
district requirements.
Six academic subject areas are covered each year (Language A, Language B, Experimental
Sciences, Individual and Societies, Mathematics, and an elective area). A student chooses three
subjects to complete at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL) for exam purposes.
Students sit for exams in each of the six subject areas. Students also take a Theory of Knowledge
course, earn 150 hours in CAS (creativity, activities and service) and complete a 4000 word
Extended Essay on a subject of their choice.
Students may earn up to 24 college credits through
testing depending on their scores and individual university policies. Colorado legislation passed
in 2005 assures the credit at all state run universities except Colorado School of Mines. Students
must earn a minimum score on their testing to receive their IB Diploma in August after
graduation. Full testing currently costs $600 for all six exams and Extended Essay
evaluation.
