ELL: (English Language Learner)
Newcomer Program: For all beginning level high school English language learners in the district. This is a one year intensive English program. Students are transported to LHS to receive two blocks of ELL each day. One class is ELL Content (academic language) and the other is ELL-A (survival language). Progress testing is done each spring. When a student moves out of ELL-A they may choose to stay at LHS from outside the attendance area. However, like any student who wishes to attend a school not in their attendance area, they must get a waiver signed by both school principals. It is important to know that district transportation is NOT provided for these students, because ELL-B and ELL-C are offered in the other high schools.
Regular ELL: For students who are not beginning English language learners. Intermediate level students receive 90 minutes of ELL-B daily. This counts as the English 9 graduation requirement. High intermediate students receive 90 minutes of ELL-C every other day. This counts as the English 10 graduation requirement.
We also offer sheltered content classes in Math, Health, Speech, Civics, Modern America and Earth Science for all of our ELL students.
Students in the ELL program predominately come from Mexico. We currently have students from Poland and Russia as well.
