2012 Summer Health Careers Institute
Are you interested in a career in the health field? Are you strong in math and science? Will you be at least 16 years of age by June 1, 2012? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, you might be interested in attending the 2012 Summer Health Careers Institute. This is a completely free seven day experience where students across the state will come together to explore various health professions. Application packets can be obtained by meeting with your counselor.
Are you interested in careers in the medical field? There is an informational Open House at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins this Thursday, March 8 from 2 -3:30 pm. Come and hear about nursing, radiology, phlebotomy, and more! See the Counseling Office for details.
Miss Colorado and Miss Colorado Teen USA - The pageant will be held this fall to select the young ladies who will represent the state of Colorado at the nation Pageants! If you are inerested in how to become a pageant contestant, please check out all eligibility requirements and apply at www.futureproductions.net.
Loveland Parks and Recreation Foundation has a Youth Scholarship Program which allows youth who are in need to select an activity through Loveland Parks and Recreation in which to participate and have it paid for through the scholarship fund. Please see Ms. Weitzel in the Counseling Office or Career Center for more details on how to qualify for this scholarship.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:We’re looking for student representatives and volunteer groups interested in participating in the 2011 Help Kids Succeed School Supply Drive.
LEADERSHIP: Student reps. would serve on the volunteer committee that raises funds for and organizes the supply drive from April - August.
VOLUNTEER: Volunteer groups can help us fund raise, collect supplies at anytime in the upcoming months, or can volunteer to help us pack backpacks
the 1st week of August.

Summer Educational Opportunities:
LOCAL:
Colorado College Summer Programs: Offered to motivated and talented rising juniors and seniors from Colorado. College Ahead! is a residential summer enrichment program for rising juniors who are ready for an introductory college-level course, and want to expand their writing skills. No cost to students for this program. The Southwest Scholars Program is an opportunity for rising seniors to take a 4.0 college credit course free of cost. These programs are intended for students who are underrepresented at CC or are first generation students. More information is available on the Colorado College website.
Regis University Reading Advancement: Regis will be offering classes to high school students that will help them increase their reading skills and speed. These classes will be offered at their Fort Collins campus this summer. For entering 9-11 graders: The program will help students make gains in comprehension while doubling their reading speed. Also helps with reading textbooks, taking notes, and studying for tests. For entering 12th graders, college students and adults: This program will help double or even triple reading speed while improving comprehension, concentration and recall. SUMMET - Summer Minority Engineering Program @ Colorado School of Mines is a three week program where students live in the residence halls, take math, science and engineering related courses, and experience life a sa college student would. The program is virtually free to the student as it is sponsored through the Minority Engineering Program. Eligible rising juniors and seniors are encourged to apply. NATIONAL:
Beloit College: Summer intensive programs in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. These programs are opten to motivated high school students age 17 or older, who are interested in either beginning, or advancing in, one of these critical-need languages. OR Beloit Summer Labs: Open to rising juniors and seniors; these three week courses are offered for college credits and allow the student to work one-on-one with factulty at one of the most highly regarded liberal arts colleges. Boston University: Through the BU Summer Term High School Programs students have the opportunity to take part in one of four summer options: High School Honors where they can enroll in two BU undergraduate courses and earn up to 8 college credits. This option is offered to incoming juniors and seniors. Research Internship in Science & Engineering where they are engaged in an actual project in the BU laboratory. Offered only to incoming seniors. Summer Challenge where students can choose two non-credit BU seminars. This two-week program is for students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Summer Preview which includes a week studying one subject in depth (either Discovering Biology or Learning the Art of Writing) and becoming familiar with college life. Emory Pre-College Program: Students can choose from credit courses which run six weeks (June 27 - August 5) or non-credit courses lasting only two weeks (June 27 - July 8; July 11 - July 22; July 25 - August 5). More information can be found here.
Pre-College Program at The George Washington University: Two options are available to students: The credit programs are offered to rising seniors only and range from a six week session (July 5 - Aug 17); three week session (July 10 - July 29); or a one week session (July 10 - July 15). Rising freshman through juniors may register for non-credit sessions either July 10 - July 22 or July 24 - August 5. More details are available by clicking here.
Pre-College with Maryland Institute College of Art: Two options available to rising juniors and seniors. Students can attend the Pre-College Residency program in Baltimore where they will explore the galleries and museums of both New York and Washington, DC and enhance their portfolio by earning three college credits. The second option is for students to attend the program in Tuscany where they will live and study in the Monte Amiata region of Italy while they draw and paint the landscape and earn two college credits. Mining and Explosives Engineering Camp at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology: June 26-29, 2011 this camp is geared toward students entering grades 10-12 who want to explore the world of explosives related to engineering and mining. Rochester Institute of Technology has an opportunity for rising seniors to explore academic and career opton working with RIT students and faculty. College and Careers is a two day program where students can learn about a variety of majors including Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, Game Design & Development Graphic Design, Markety, Packaging Science, Photography, and many more. There will be over 70 academic sessions from which to choose. There is also a parent program offered at the same time. Program dates are July 22-23 and August 5-6. Washington University at St. Louis: High School Summer Scholars - Current sophomore or junior students can attend classes at Washington University (St. Louis, MO) for five weeks and earn college credit that will be transferable to most accredited colleges and universities OR chose the Institute program that is only three weeks with no college credits. For more information and application materials, click here. Art Portfolio Plus Program (June 27 - July 29) Open to students 16 and older who are incoming juniors or seniors. You wil build and document your portfolio while studying and making art in a real studio. Also includes organized trips to museums and vists to artists' studios. Carries 6 college credits.
