Band
Matthew Arau, Director
Aaron Vogel, Assistant Director
There are five different bands at LHS: Concert Band, Wind Symphony 1, Wind Symphony 2, Jazz Band and Beginning Jazz Band.
Another aspect of band is the Marching Band. The Crimson Regiment Marching Band has been a state finalist the past several years receiving no position below 4th place and taking three state championships since 2002. The marching band has also won first place in division 2A at the Bands of America (BOA) San Antonio Regional and Grand Champion at Zia Marching Festival in Albuquerque, NM. In 2004 at the BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis, the band took 24th place out of the 94 bands from all around the country. In 2006 the band traveled to San Antonio, TX and took 1st place in class 2A, at the BOA super regionals there. The marching band starts meeting in June and has a week long intense band camp in July. Every Saturday includes a practice from 9 am to 5 pm. Marching seasons ends with first quarter and the band splits into three groups, Wind Symphony 1, Wind Symphony 2, and Concert Band, by audition.
The Loveland High School Wind Symphony has had consistent Excellent and Superior ratings during Mr Arau's tenure. In 2008 the Loveland High School Wind Symphony was honored at the Colorado Music Educators Assosiation (CMEA) by performing there in mid January, as one of only three schools picked every year to perform.
Overall, Band is a very difficult, but rewarding, activity. It requires thought of the past, present, and future all at once. A player has to think about what they just played, what they are playing at that moment, and what is coming up in the music. Not to mention a million other things that a player has to be thinking about at all times, liking tuning, tone, dynamics, articulation... there's a really long list.
There are also several small groups that meet out of class time. Some meet before school at 6:30 as much as three times a week. Some of these include the Woodwind Quintet, Brass Quintet, Clarinet Choir, Flute Trios and Duets, Flute Choir, and Brass Choir. These groups meet and perform at concerts and other performances in the community.
