2009 - 2010 PROFILE

The Community
Loveland, a community of approximately 62,000 offers an appealing lifestyle from enjoying the great outdoors at our parks and lakes to taking in the culture of the arts. As the “Gateway to the Rockies,” Loveland is nestled in a valley at the mouth of the beautiful Big Thompson Canyon. Located 50 miles north of Denver, its economic base is diverse. Areas of employment range from professional to semi-skilled with a large representation in the skilled-technical area. Employers include Hewlett-Packard, Agilent, Wal-Mart, McKee Medical Center, Medical Center of the Rockies, Hach Company, U.S. West Resources, Woodward Governor and a number of art and bronze casting studios. Commuters are employed in the area by CSU and IBM. Tourism contributes to the economy in the summer months. Five universities are within commuting distance of Loveland; they are the University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Colorado at Denver, Regis University, Colorado State University, the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado School of Mines and The University of Denver. Aims Community College and Front Range Community College are also within easy driving distance.

Thompson R2-J School District
The district educational system includes a K-12 program which serves approximately 14,500 students. The district not only includes the city of Loveland, but rural areas surrounding the city as well as the town of Berthoud and adjacent areas. There are 19 elementary schools, five middle schools, four high schools and one alternative high school.

Loveland High School
There are approximately 1,700 students enrolled at Loveland High School in grades 9-12. The staff includes five administrators, six counselors, a psychologist, and 90 certified instructors. In addition there are part-time certified specialists, including a nurse. The high school has been operating on a block schedule since Fall of 1992. Classes meet for 95 minutes every other day for eighteen weeks which is a semester class. A few Math classes meet every day to accommodate students wishing to accelerate in these subjects. For classes that meet daily, students receive one full credit for the semester.

Higher Education
Approximately 47% of the 2009 graduating senior class planned to attend a four-year collegiate institution. Approximately 27% will attend a two-year college.

Test Results
Approximately two thirds of each graduating class take the national ACT. Students in the class of 2009 who took the national ACT in 2008-2009 scored a mean composite of 21.4 on the National ACT. All Juniors take the state mandated ACT test in April of each year. The state mandated test mean composite for the class of 2010 was 21.5.

Graduation Requirements
Twenty-two credits are required for graduation for students in the classes of 2010 and 2011. These requirements include 3.0 credits in English, 2.5 credits in Social Studies, 2.0 credits in Mathematics, 2.0 credits in Science, .5 credit in Physical Education, .5 credit in Speech, .5 credit in Health, .5 credit in Applied Arts, .5 credit in Fine Arts, 10.0 Interest pathway/General Elective credits. The balance of a student's program is determined by his or her educational needs. The class of 2012 will be required to complete 24 credits.

Curriculum
A comprehensive program of courses is offered to students including college preparatory, general education, career education and special programs for resource and for emotionally disturbed students. Advanced Placement courses are offered in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, English Literature, English Language, Psychology, Macroeconomics, Micro-economics, US History, US Government, AP Human Geography and Physics-C Mechanics. Pre AP classes are available in English, Biology, Civics, World History, Geophysical Lab Science, Spanish and French. Articulated courses are offered in College Composition I, Creative Writing, Accelerated Physics, Spanish and French Level IV and V through the University of Colorado-Denver. Students may earn the distinction of Honors Scholar at graduation by completing 28 credits, a more rigorous curriculum, service learning hours and achieving a 3.7 GPA.

International Baccalaureate
We graduated our first class of IB seniors in May, 2009. Standard and Higher Level exams were give in Language A-English, Math Studies, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, History of the Americas, French, German, Spanish, Music, ITGS, and Business Management. Each exam has two sessions for a total of 24 sessions and 117 exams administered in May 2009. We had four students earn certificates in specified areas and an 89% earn rate for our full diploma candidates.

Grade Point Average/Rank in Class
Grades in all classes (grades 9-12) are used in computing the grade point average of a student. Class rank is determined for each student at the end of each semester beginning with grade 9. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes have weighted grades. All graduates who achieve a 4.0 GPA or above receive the distinction of Valedictorian. This policy will change with the class of 2012.

Advanced Placement Examinations
In May, 2009, a total of 397 examinations were written by 217 students in the following subjects: Biology, Environmental Science, Calculus (AB and BC), Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, U.S. Government / Politics, English Language / Composition, English Literature / Composition and U.S. History. Sixty-eight percent of those who took Advanced Placement examinations in 2009 received scores of 3 or above.

Extra-Curricular Activities
A large variety of activities and employment opportunities are available to students. Approximately 48% of the students participate in school activities outside the classroom and this is seen as a strength of this school's educational program.

Loveland High School is accredited by the State of Colorado.
