The Community

Loveland, a community of approximately 62,000 offers an appealing lifestyle from enjoying the great outdoors at our parks and lakes to taking in the culture of the arts. As the “Gateway to the Rockies,” Loveland is nestled in a valley at the mouth of the beautiful Big Thompson Canyon. Located 50 miles north of Denver, its economic base is diverse. Areas of employment range from professional to semi-skilled with a large representation in the skilled-technical area. Employers include Hewlett-Packard, Agilent, Wal-Mart, McKee Medical Center, Medical Center of the Rockies, Hach Company, U.S. West Resources, Woodward Governor and a number of art and bronze casting studios. Commuters are employed in the area by Colorado State University and IBM. Tourism contributes to the economy in the summer months. Seven universities are within commuting distance of Loveland; they are the University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Colorado at Denver, Regis University, Colorado State University, the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado School of Mines and The University of Denver. Aims Community College and Front Range Community College are also within easy driving distance.

 

Thompson R2-J School District

The district educational system includes a K-12 program which serves approximately 14,500 students. The district not only includes the city of Loveland, but rural areas surrounding the city as well as the town of Berthoud and adjacent areas. There are 20 elementary schools, five middle schools, four high schools and one alternative high school. Students may also earn a diploma through the Thompson Online School.

 

Loveland High School

There are approximately 1,500 students enrolled at Loveland High School in grades 9-12. The staff includes five administrators, five counselors and 90 certified instructors. In addition, there are part-time certified specialists, including a psychologist, a social worker and a nurse. The high school has been operating on a block schedule since Fall of 1992. Classes meet for 95 minutes every other day for eighteen weeks which is a semester class. A few math classes meet every day to accommodate students wishing to accelerate in these subjects. For classes that meet daily, students receive one full credit for the semester.

 

Higher Education

Approximately 40% of the 2012 graduating senior class planned to attend a four-year collegiate institution. Approximately 36% will attend a two-year college.

 

Test Results

All Juniors take the state mandated ACT test in April of each year. The state mandated test mean composite for the Junior class of 2012 was 21.8. Students in the class of 2012 who took the National ACT in 2011-2012 scored a mean composite of 21.2.

 

Graduation Requirements

Twenty-four credits are required for graduation for students in the class of 2012. These requirements include 4.0 credits in English (includes 0.5 credit in Speech), 3.0 credits in Social Studies, 3.0 credits in Mathematics, 3.0 credits in Science, 1.0 credit in World language, 0.5 credit in Physical Education, 0.5 credit in Health, 0.5 credit in Applied Arts, 0.5 credit in Fine Arts, 8.0 Interest pathway/General Elective credits. The balance of a student’s program is determined by his or her educational needs.

 

Curriculum

A comprehensive program of courses is offered to students including college preparatory, general education, career education and special programs for students with disabilities and those needing English language acquisition. Advanced Placement courses are offered in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, English Literature, English Language, Psychology, Macroeconomics, Micro-economics, US History, US Government, Human Geography, Studio Art and Physics-C Mechanics. Pre AP classes are available in English, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Biology, Civics, World History, Geophysical Lab Science, Spanish, German and French. An articulated course is offered in French Level IV through the University of Colorado-Denver. Students may earn the distinction of Honors Scholar at graduation by completing 28 credits, a more rigorous curriculum, service learning hours and achieving a 3.7 GPA.

 

International Baccalaureate

LHS offers the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) to any interested 9th or 10th grade student. MYP provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

The IB Diploma Programme, founded in 1968 in Geneva, is a rigorous course of college-level study in the 11th and 12th grades that is widely recognized and honored at universities around the world. Loveland High has been an IB World School since 2007. Students engage in a course of study that comprises six core subjects: Language A (English), Language B (French or Spanish), History of the Americas/Economics, Experimental Sciences (Chemistry and/or Biology), Mathematics (Studies, Standard or Higher Level), Electives (Music, Business, Information Technology in a Global Society, etc.). Students also complete the Theory of Knowledge class, an Extended Essay and a Community, Action and Service project. In May 2012, seven students earned IB Diplomas. This represents 100% of Loveland High’s Diploma Candidates.

 

Advanced Placement Examinations

In May, 2012, 244 students sat for 518 exams in the following subjects: Biology, Environmental Science, Calculus (AB and BC), Statistics, Chemistry, Physics (Mechanics) Physics (Electricity and Magnetism), Psy-chology, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, U.S. Govern-ment and Politics, Human Geography, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Studio Art, U.S. History and Music Theory. Seventy-two percent of AP exams taken resulted in scores of 3 or above.

 

Grade Point Average/Rank in Class

Grades in all classes (grades 9-12) are used in computing the grade point average of a student. Class rank is determined for each student at the end of each semester beginning with grade 9. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme classes have weighted grades.

Extra-Curricular Activities

A large variety of activities and employment opportunities are available to students. Approximately 59% of the students participate in school activities outside the classroom and this is seen as a strength of this school’s educational program.
